The Polk County Road Department started, unofficially, in 1914 with citizens of the community coming together to do maintenance on county roads. As more travel began on what were known as “pike” roads, the necessity to form an organized department grew.
It was officially established in 1935 with the first road superintendent, George Williams, appointed by the governing body. Mr. Williams served until 1947. For 88 years, the department has implemented new ideas and technology as it has become available and financially affordable.
