Due to the geographical divide of the Cherokee National Forest, this department has two distinct locations. The main office is in Benton, while a satellite garage operates out of Ducktown.
We are responsible for maintaining 425 miles of roads, bridges, and rights of way adopted into the county-maintained system.
We have written, applied for, and been awarded over $35 million in grants for various road projects, none of which were at 100%. We work closely with the county commission to seek matching funds as grants are awarded to maximize governmental dollars locally in our county.
Polk County Government operates under the Purchasing Act of 1957, which stipulates that bookwork, purchasing, human resources, and surplus equipment are to be handled by the Director of Accounts and Budgets and Purchasing Department for Polk County. There is no Purchasing Department at this time. This causes a recurring audit finding for the county written by the State of Tennessee Comptroller’s Office.
The office staff at the Polk County Road Department has successfully maintained the accounting and budgetary functions for the past 88 years, in addition to the responsibilities of grant maintenance and everyday road department functions. We work closely with the State of TN Comptroller's Office and County Technical Assistance Services (CTAS) to achieve this goal.
Our department oversees the maintenance of the county fueling sites.
Our staff members are trained and hold underground tanker licenses and certifications to assist the various agencies that use our resources to fuel county vehicles, including Polk County Schools, Polk County Sheriff's Office, West Polk Fire and Rescue, and Copper Basin Fire Department.
